3 Signs Your Fireplace May Need Repair
Since it’s warm out, you may not have used your fireplace in a while. If you plan to test it out or get it ready for the cooler season, here are some things to watch out for that may indicate your fireplace needs repair.
1. Your Home Gets Smoky
The purpose of your fireplace is to provide warmth, light, and a cozy atmosphere. Your fireplace will naturally put off a small amount of smoke, but if your flume and chimney are working properly, the smoke should filter to the outside. If your home gets smoky after lighting your fireplace, it could be a sign that something is wrong inside your chimney.
2. There’s a Funny Smell
No matter what type of fireplace you have, you generally should not notice a funny smell coming from the unit. With wood-burning fireplaces, some level of smell is normal, especially if you are using a pungent type of wood. But if you notice a smell that is not normal, you may want to call in a professional.
If you have gas logs, a funny smell could be an indicator that there is a gas leak. This is extremely dangerous to your health and safety, and the safety of your home. If you notice a funny smell, immediately turn off or put out the fire and get to a well-ventilated area. Call The Fire Man to assess the situation and determine if you and/or your home is in danger.
3. You Haven’t Done Routine Maintenance
Wood-burning fireplaces are common here in the North Georgia mountains, but many homeowners prefer gas logs due to the ease of use. This is especially true of homeowners who rent their properties for vacation rentals. Gas logs are easy to maintain and don’t require a lot of cleaning or storing fuel. However, you should remember that any fireplace can have problems.
Whether gas, wood-burning, or electric – you should do routine maintenance and inspections on your fireplace to make sure your appliance is safe and functioning properly. If you haven’t done routine maintenance on your property’s fireplace this season, make sure to do so before the cold weather hits.
